Time4Writing is a homeschool parent’s best friend! Having my mind elsewhere at the same time did not help matters. This is a great story for those who love words; as a child, it would have just made me giggle with adoring all those fun words, string together so charmingly, creating a zany and delicious read-aloud. Actually it makes it very hard to read – some of the words are verging on medical jargon. The cartoonlike drawings reflect the action, always including the unruffled baby–until disaster strikes.

It is Margaret Mahy gone too far with her over the top adjectives – would make it impossible to read aloud to a group. Children in Early Years or Year 1 would love this book during a story time session, although Bubble Trouble would also be an ideal model for older children working on poetic devices such as alliteration, assonance, and consonance.

There is rhyming throughout the story and the illustrations show the emotions of the people in the town. It is a lot of fun to try to read though. The crabby couple, the scrabble players, the patchwork quilters – they watch in horror when naughty Abel shots a pebble at the bubble. Just remember to practice reading this book out loud first to nail the rhythm! Just like the text, the illustrations are fun and a little bit crazy. In she was presented with the Hans Christian Andersen medal, which is the highest international recognition granted to authors and illustrators of children’s trouhle. Unfortunately, I had a smaller and younger crowd and I think some of it was completely going over their head.

Refresh and try again. Polly Dunbar’s illustrations support the text well, with clear characterisation and a wonderful array of facial expressions. Review quote The book shows the fun that can be had with language, and will be enjoyed by children over a wide age range.

Some of the rhymes are just perfection. I think it will be an enjoyable story to use in storytime as I’m trying not to do all bedtimey-themed books for PJ storytime. Threeble, in a muddle with her needle matching pink and purple patcher for a pretty patchwork quiltwhen her older sister told her, tossed the quilt across her shoulder, as trounle set off at a totter in her tattered tartan kilt. Overall, I love it. His sister tried to save him.

Illustrations weren’t my favorite style, msrgaret, that’s more personal preference and really they do go well with the t Four stars for including Scrabble and a ridiculous rhyme structure that many parents will barely limp through.
